If you’re not that keen on the cheeky black-and-white dog from the Schultz cartoons you may not want to search out this particular café when you’re visiting South Korea. I do understand that not everyone has been collecting Snoopy memorabilia since childhood, and that it may not be high on your list of must-sees. If you do want to pop in, however, you’ll find it in Incheon Airport, near Gate 12. There were apparently other outlets in Seoul but these have since closed. It looks like Hello Kitty is trumping Snoopy in the kitsch popularity stakes.

Disappointingly, there’s nowhere to sit but you can buy a range of drinks, sandwiches and snacks, as well as a number of Snoopy themed souvenirs such as tea, mugs, figures etc. I’m sure you get the general idea. Is the food anything to write home about? Not really. You’re only coming so you can hug the giant Snoopy or Charlie Brown out the front, eat a cake shaped like Woodstock’s head and wipe your sticky fingers on a Peanuts napkin. It really is only recommended for the fans out there.

And in case you hadn’t guessed, I’m one of them!

For a big city that attracts a lot of tourists, the idea of a free walking tour might seem a little alien. In February 2009, however, Ross and Justine set up the ‘I’m Free’ walking tours of Sydney and they’ve been going from strength-to-strength ever since. I decided to catch up with them a couple of months ago and joined the large group of camera-wielding tourists that met next to the scaffolding near Town Hall at 10.30. Tours leave from Town Hall every day at 10.30 and 14.30, just look for the person wearing the bright green T-shirt and handing out maps.

The beginning of the tour takes in such sights as the Queen Victoria Building and its Royal Automata Clock, and a replica of the word ‘Eternity’ in Town Hall Square. A man named Arthur Stace chalked the word on pavements in Sydney for over thirty years and later in the tour, when walking down Martin Place, you’ll be shown a bell that apparently has inside it, the last surviving ‘Eternity’ written by Arthur. These are just some of the things you’ll learn as you walk past the main sights and through the laneways of the city. If you think you’ve seen everything in Sydney, think again.

I didn’t know about the Sydney Hilton bombing in 1978, I’d forgotten about the suspended, empty bird cages in Angel Place, and you can’t beat a visit to see ‘Waiting’ the statue of a businessman sitting on a bench in Australia Square.

As luck would have it, the day I chose to go on the tour was the four-year anniversary of ‘I’m Free’ tours and so I was able to meet both Ross and Justine. I didn’t manage, however, to get near the cakes that were on offer but they looked delicious!

Tours run for three hours, although there is a break halfway through, so ensure you bring enough water and slather on the suncream as there’s not much shade. The tours are free, but you’re encouraged (and really should) give a donation at the end. Tours also run from the Rocks at 18.00.

Most people these days will find that their hotel or hostel offers Wi-Fi but with smartphones and sometimes astronomical roaming charges, free Wi-Fi is something a lot of us search out during the day. If you’re in Sydney and want to get online, you can try the following options:

1. Libraries

Libraries in Sydney offer free Wi-Fi, although in some you may have to ask at the desk for a code. The State Library of New South Wales on Macquarie Street has Wi-Fi, as well as computer terminals and desks with plugs. If you want to work there though and need a desk, arrive early as they fill up pretty fast. There are comfy chairs near the entrance and a pleasant little café. If you’re looking for somewhere cool (temperature-wise!) and quiet, consider popping in to the Customs House at Circular Quay where you can also catch up on news from home with the free papers. There are a number of other smaller libraries dotted around, for example in Glebe, Surrey Hills and King’s Cross.

2. Cafés and other food joints

Cafés are usually a good bet for connecting to the internet, but I won’t list all the options here. If, however, you can find a Starbucks – there are plenty dotted around – you can log on. The same goes for McDonald’s. Other independents or smaller chains occasionally advertise that they offer internet and you’ll find quite a few places in Newtown where I don’t think anyone would mind buying a coffee and settling down for a bit to relax.

3. Queen Victoria Building (QVB)

You may or may not be able to afford anything in the shops here but the building is worth a visit anyway and as a cherry on top it offers free Wi-Fi. Check your Facebook or catch up on emails while you wait for the clock to strike the hour and for Charles I to be beheaded. The QVB is on George Street near Town Hall, you can’t miss it.

4. Sydney ferries

Great for commuters but available to anyone popping over to Manly for example to lounge on the beach or Taronga Zoo to see the animals, Sydney ferries offers internet access on their vessels.

5. Sydney ferries

As all good airports should, Sydney’s domestic and international terminals allow you to connect to the Wi-Fi network for free.

On Sunday 17th February, Sydney’s streets between Town Hall and Chinatown were packed with spectators who had all turned out to watch the Twilight Parade, one of the biggest and most spectacular celebrations of Chinese New Year in the city. This year, 2013, is the year of the snake.

Crowds waved their red plastic snakes (courtesy of medibank) as they waited in the growing dusk, and those people who had been camping out on plastic stools tucking into their picnics, packed away and stood up to take their places against the barriers. Stewards entertained the waiting hordes, the one near us performed some very impressive robot dancing and flung random questions at the audience such as, ‘If you were a jelly bean, which flavour would you be?’ He didn’t seem to really know what to do with the answers though … Just after 8pm the parade set off and floats, dancers, acrobats and martial arts groups filed past, accompanied by an animal from the Chinese Zodiac. Cameras flashes, people cheered and waved, and fireworks lit up the sky; the party had begun.

The time seemed to pass by so quickly in a blur of colours and movement, and soon the last band trooped past and people began to drift away. Next year I think I’ll try and position myself on the other side of George Street so I can see the parade rounding the corner but I will be there again, cheering and admiring the work and creativity that goes into making this such an enjoyable free event.

Back in June of last year I posted about the film ‘The Way’ and mentioned it was the only one I knew that featured the Compostela pilgrimage. The original post can be read here. One of my readers, Alain, left a comment mentioning the French film ‘Saint Jacques … La Mecque’ and a while ago I finally got around to watching it.

This French comedy dates back to 2005 and the story starts with estranged siblings (two brothers and one sister) being told that they won’t inherit unless they complete the pilgrimage together. They set off with a group of six other pilgrims and a guide, and the film follows the ups and downs along the way and slowly reveals the different reasons people have set off on the walk. It’s a funny, touching story and one definitely worth watching. The countryside is beautifully shot and you’ll no doubt be inspired to complete at least a section of the Compostela.

I watched it in French on a DVD from Amazon France with no sub-titles, but you may be able to access a dubbed or sub-titled version from Canada or online.

I found these pictures recently, I took them back in December when I was in Luxembourg, and they inspired me to write a short post about something I’m very keen on – cake! The creations below are from Oberweis, which is a Luxembourg chain of cafés/restaurants found in such places as Luxembourg city, the central station and the Auchan shopping centre on Kirchberg Plateau. Oberweis has been around since the 1960s and makes fantastic chocolates, some lovely colourful macarons (which make great gifts for people back home), and a range of beautiful cakes both large and small.

Yes, the cake above is as sickly as it looks. It’s a delicious concoction of chocolate and raspberry and is called a ‘Coup de Coeur’ (which roughly translates as liking something or someone instantly, or on sight). This made my day!

This next one was my mum’s choice, and I’m sorry about the iPhone photo being a little blurry. I had to include the picture though because the cake is such as great idea. It’s a rum baba and that pipette you see at the top is filled with rum. so if you want a booze-free cake that’s fine or you can inject your own alcohol into the sponge. It adds an extra dose of fun to a coffee and cake stop.

Now I know that not everyone has a sweet tooth, so don’t despair. Oberweis also offers a good value ‘menu du jour’, which usually boasts a meat or fish option and ranges from steak and chips to couscous to shrimp tagliatelle. Also on the main menu are such options as sandwiches, croque monsieur and bouchées à la reine.

If you’re in Luxembourg and don’t know where to stop for lunch, try here. If you’re shopping and need an afternoon pick-me-up, tuck into one of the cakes, it’ what we always do when we’re in town.

If you’re walking along Stokes Croft in Bristol and see a café with a cheerful yellow exterior and steamed up windows, you’ve probably stumbled across @the well.

This café/launderette opened in 2012, and if you thought everyone did their washing at home these days, pop down here to find out your mistake. @the well takes the boredom out of laundry by offering computer terminals in a side room, as well as free Wi-Fi, a small children’s area and a menu of tasty treats, including breakfast pancakes with blueberries or bacon, mushrooms on toast, fish finger sandwiches and the classic toast with jam.

There are even special offers, for example if you need to do a number of washes and want to have your breakfast while you wait, have a duvet that desperately needs a clean, or want to take advantage of the ‘Dot Cotton’, a full service wash and a tea or coffee for £12.

Even if you’ve got your own washing machine at home, I’d recommend coming down here for the atmosphere, the lovely surrounds and the good coffee and cake. If your heating’s not working, you’ll definitely love it here as it can be positively balmy when the dryers are going!
